The Nuclear Technology Centre Abuja of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission has been affiliated with the University of Abuja to run undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Nuclear Science and Engineering.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission, Professor Yusuf Ahmed stated this in Abuja at the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah.

Professor Ahmed said the University would use the laboratories and equipment at the Nuclear Technology Centre for the purpose of developing human capital for the country for the promotion of Nuclear energy and Nuclear programmes.

Professor Ahmed explained that the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission has 6 centres, one in each geo-political zones affiliated with a federal University where research, innovation and technology is being developed including capacity building, manpower training and educational activities.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja Professor Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah described the development as a new dawn for Nigeria in addressing her energy challenges through the development of the necessary manpower with research and innovation.

Professor Na’Allah who stressed that the developmental crisis of Nigeria is largely attached to energy said when the crisis is addressed, the country would develop tremendously.

Most of the crisis of development in the country is attached to the crisis of energy, if you resolve the problems of energy, most problems are resolved. The way that Nuclear has helped humanity positively, if we had explored that in this nation we would have been at a level that is comparable to many nations of the world and our effort today is to say better late than never.

The University of Abuja, and the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission is standing up to take this very seriously to ensure that we begin to succeed. Our concern is mostly on the safety use of atomic, to benefit lives and growth of our nation.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed confidence that the collaboration would take the country to a new level of development.

The Director of Energy Research Centre, University of Abuja, Dr Kafayat Adeyemi would develop manpower to construct and maintain nuclear installations for the purpose of generating electricity, and undertake research into matters relating to the peaceful use of atomic energy.
