The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha has inaugurated the Governing Board of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Inaugurating the Board in Abuja, Mr Boss Mustapha charged members of the board to provide policy direction to the Commission in combating financial crimes.
Mr Mustapha urged the board members to provide a robust policy direction that would help the Commission to discharge its responsibility efficiently.
‘‘You are, however, required to put in your best to combat financial and economic crimes in the country. The Commission is empowered to prevent, investigate, prosecute and penalise economic and financial crimes and is charged with the responsibility of enforcing the provisions of other laws and regulations relating to economic and financial crimes, as well as fight terrorism”. Mr Mustapha stated.
Mr Mustapha called on the members to work together to generate robust policy initiatives that would help the present administration achieve its fight against corruption and revamp the economy.
Mr Mustapha said that the day-to-day running of the commission remained the exclusive duty of the management.
“Let me reiterate the fact that governing boards are creations of the enabling statutes of the various institutions, with the main responsibility for giving policy direction to management, in order to contribute towards the developmental goals of government”. Mr Mustapha noted.
The Chairman of the Board and Chairman of EFCC, Mr AbdulRasheed Bawa said the Commission had secured 2,220 convictions in 2021.
He explained that EFCC managed to, set a new record in terms of recoveries as well as, convictions.
A Member of the Governing Board, Alhaji Kola Adeshina expressed the hope that the new Governing Board would complement the work of EFCC.
Alhaji Adeshina maintained that the he would bring his expertise on intelligence gathering to bear in exposing financial crimes.
