The Nigeria Union of Journalists has described as ill timed and reckless the revocation of licenses of 52 broadcast stations over indebtedness by the National Broadcast Commission, NBC, nationwide.
A statement by the President, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Comrade Chris Isiguzo said the decision of the Commission was taken without careful prior consultation especially as the Nation grapples with the challenges of insecurity.
According to the statement, the Union regret the inability of the broadcast stations in question to fulfil their obligations to NBC in view of dwindling resources, it caution against the large scale clampdown of broadcast stations with it’s attendant consequences.
The NUJ urged the Commission to exercise more restraint on the issue in consideration of national security and allow for more dialogue to find a better way of handling the situation.
