The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has led workers to converged on the National Assembly Complex, Abuja to demand overwhelming votes from the federal lawmakers, ahead of the clause by clause voting on the ongoing constitution alteration process.

They specifically want the leadership of the National Assembly to include in the exclusive legislative list, autonomy for the judiciary, state legislatures, local governments as well as give powers to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to conduct all local council elections in the country.

Addressing the crowd of workers during the advocacy procession rally, which kicked off at the headquarters of the NLC, Central Business District, Abuja, as early as 9am today, NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba urged the National Assembly to amend sections of the 1999 constitution to ensure full autonomy to Judiciary, State Legislature and the Local Government Councils in the country.

Comrade Wabba expressed regret that over 20 years of unterupted democracy in the country, governance at the grassroots have been mortgaged by few individuals at the state levels leading to absence of development at the rural communities and rising insecurity.

He condemned in strong terms the situation where local administrations have been at the mercy of State Governors who divert the funds meant for rural infrastructure and security, stressing that the impunity must be stopped.

Recall that the National Assembly will from tomorrow begin proceedings to amend sections of the constitution allegedly hindering growth in the country.
