The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has listed Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi as states with prevalent cases of Lassa fever in the country.

The three states are said to have accounted for 68 percent of the confirmed cases of the disease.

A breakdown from the centre’s situation report on the disease shows that Ondo had 28; Edo, 24; and Bauchi, 16 per cent of the confirmed cases.

 NCDC also disclosed that 217 suspected cases were discovered between April 4 and 10, while 24 cases were confirmed, and six deaths were recorded.

 The Centre, however, said no new healthcare workers were infected during the week.

 The situation report reads, “In week 14, the number of new confirmed cases increased from 10 in week 13, 2022 to 24 cases. These were reported from Bauchi, Ondo, Edo, Ebonyi, Gombe, and Kogi States.

 “138 deaths within weeks 1 to 14, 2022, have been reported with a case fatality rate of 19.3%, which is lower than the CFR for the same period in 2021 (20.7%). By 2022, 23 states have recorded at least one confirmed case across 93 Local Government Areas.

 “Of all confirmed cases at 68%, Ondo has 28%, Edo, 24%, and Bauchi, 16%.

 “The predominant age-= group affected is 21-30 years (Range: 1 to 80 years, Median Age:

30 years). The male to female ratio for confirmed cases is 1:0.8.

 “The number of suspected cases has increased compared to that reported for the same period in 2021.”

 The Centre said the National Lassa fever multi-partner, multi-sectoral Emergency Coordination Centre had been activated to coordinate response activities at all levels.
