The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has seized illicit herbal preparations found to be harmful to the human body and leading many to death.
The Director General of NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye stated this at a press briefing in Abuja.
She said the Agency swung into action on receiving reports on the sale of illicit herbal intoxicants popularly called ‘Kurkura’ Gargle, Herbal Aphrodisiacs and Alcoholic Bitters across the country.
On the herbal preparation known as ‘Kurkura’, Professor Adeyeye said the drug found mostly in the South-West and Northern axis of the country revealed a dangerous substances laced with high concentration of tobacco and cannabis used by Artisans, Drivers and motorcycle riders.
Some of the products include; five minutes power herbs medicine, haonu laha herbal mixture and gamzaki tradomedical.
NAFDAC DG explained the Agency raided and shutdown some medicine shops in Kaduna State selling illegal herbal Aphrodisiacs laced with cannabis.
Some of the products include Gagare Man Power, Almenjou For Lazy men in bed, Nisan Zango Karfin maza and Afafata for sexual drive.
However, on the alcoholic bitters known as ‘Japata’, Professor Adeyeye said the product was duly registered by the Agency but was found to be laced with marijuana or cannabis compared to the registered product which had only ethanol.
She said the product caused the death of a mice within five minutes after laboratory test.
The NAFDAC boss urged Nigerians to desist from such life-threatening drugs and substances.
