Gender equality has been described as a necessary ingredient for sustainable development.

A guest lecturer, Ms Eunice Agbogun made the assertion at the celebration of International Women’s Day organized by the Kogi State chapter of Women Committee of the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) in Lokoja.

Ms Agbogun noted that women in the society face a lot of discrimination in their places of work, home and even culturally which has affected their productivity.

She maintained that educating women and the girl-child has tremendous advantage as they contribute positively to societal growth.

The lecturer stated that the world must rise up and address the issues of gender inequality for the development of the society.

Ms Agbogun, who opined that when the female gender is marginalized, she would not be able to attain full potential, advocated educating women and the girl-child, end all forms of discrimination as well as empowering them to contribute positively to the society.

Earlier in an address, the State Chairperson, NLC Women Committee, Comrade Habiba Umar-Ibrahim, said the program was to celebrate and appreciate the role of women in nation building.

Comrade Habiba noted that the theme for this year’s celebration ‘Gender equality for a sustainable tomorrow’ is very apt as the society needs the contribution of all to develop.

In her goodwill message, the Secretary to the State Government Mrs Folashade Ayoade, congratulated tye women on the celebration, assuring of her support to issues affecting women.

In a message to the occasion, the State Head of Civil Service, Mrs. Hannah Odiyo represented by the acting Director, Establishment and Training, Mrs Anne Onoja thanked God for witnessing this year’s celebration, describing women as great in the society.

Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, the Deputy Director, Women Affairs, Mrs Falusi Abimbola urged women to be productive and not rely completely on the men.

The State NLC Chairman, Comrade Onuh Edoka, felicitated with the women on the International Women’s Day, acknowledging their contributions to the society.
