Federal Government has been urged to find a lasting solution to the incessant increase in the price of cooking Gas in the country.

This was sequel to a motion by a member from Osun State, Mr Afolabi Rasheed, on the urgent need to check the persistent increase in the price of cooking gas in Nigeria.

The lawmaker, expressed concern that a kilogram of Gas which was previously sold for N300 is now sold at over N700.

He observed that Nigerians have been facing various challenges including insecurity, extreme poverty, high cost of food and essential consumables and most recently, a persistent rise in the price of cooking gas.

According to him, cooking gas is a basic need for many Nigerians, especially those living in the urban and semi urban areas who use it daily to prepare their meals.

“Nigeria, which is ranked 9th among the countries in the world with the highest reservoir of gas resources and about 207 trillion standard cubits’ feet as of 2019, would subject its citizens to such hardship arising from high cost of cooking gas”. Mr Afolabi Rasheed stated.

He added that there is an urgent need for the Federal Government to wade in as marketers have attributed the increase to the value added tax imposed on them.

Adopting the motion, the House mandated its committee on Gas Resources to liaise with the Minister to proffer a lasting solution to the issue.
