The Federal Government says it is working speedily to complete the 120,000-kilometre fibre optic cable project to enhance internet access, financial inclusiveness and telecom services nationwide.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), Professor Garba Danbatta stated this while addressing guests at the Commission’s World Consumer’s Rights Day commemoration.

Professor Danbatta said the Federal Government had so far completed about 55,000 kilometres of the project, while the rest will be completed soon to further integrate the grassroots in governance and digital financial services.

He said in view of the critical value of consumer satisfaction to the telecom sector, the commission has designed a “TELCARE” system – meant to create a stronger nexus between telecom consumers and providers.

The Executive Chairman of the Commission and Chairman of the NCC Board, Professor Adeolu Akande said Broadband penetration – a conduit for internet access – had reached 48.8% while telecom subscriptions had attained 195 million, an indication of the astronomical growth in the sector.

The representatives of the Office of the National Security Adviser, General Samuel Akinsode, and National Disability Empowerment Forum, Dr Christopher Nwanore emphasised the need for synergy with security personnel on new developments in the sector and the need for more accessible information for persons with Disabilities.
