The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has described the death of the Founder of DAAR Communications, and pioneer of private broadcast station in Nigeria, Chief Alego Raymond Dokpesi as great loss to the journalism profession.

NUJ in a statement signed by it’s national President, Chief Chris Isiguzo, MFR, said the Media Mogul who died at the age of 71 would be greatly missed for his contributions to the development of the industry.

According to the statement, Chief Raymond Dokpesi was a dogged defender of the profession whom despite the difficult terrain under which the media operates in the country from the State Actors, stood firmly in support of a free and independent media and resisted the attempt of increased control and harassment of Journalists.

The statement also described the deceased as a detribalised Nigerian whose forthrightness, doggedness remain outstanding.

It called on all Nigerian Journalists to promote more of Development Journalism and continue to exhibit the highest professional and ethical standards as exemplified by Chief Dokpesi as the best way to immortalize him.
